About

I’ve spent 15 years in fast-growing national and nonprofit newsrooms working at the intersection of editorial, audience, product and business. I specialize in setting clear goals, developing and testing new programs, strategies and products, using data to make creative decisions and crafting environments that empower superstars to do their best work. My last few jobs were at The Marshall Project, ProPublica and Vox; most recently, I was Vox’s Executive Director of Strategy.

I’ve spoken on much of the above at places like F8, news:rewired, and the Online News Association Conference. Journalism.co.uk included me on a list of 200 speakers you need at your next event. I’ve also taught classes on writing, reporting and audience engagement at Columbia, NYU and the City University of New York. I have a BA from Brown in English with a focus on creative nonfiction, and a masters in digital journalism from NYU’s Studio 20.

Stuff I’ve done:

  • Built a successful consumer revenue program

  • Led a brand positioning and mission refresh

  • Designed analytic frameworks that encouraged rapid iteration on editorial and product strategies

  • Shaped The Marshall Project’s audience strategy from scratch

  • Edited social media content that helped millions of people understand the pandemic

  • Pioneered community journalism initiatives that have led to tens of thousands of people contributing to video, audio and text explanatory and investigative reporting

  • Mentored, managed and coached departments of up to 30 people

  • Designed a two-month fundraising roadtrip that retraced a route my mom took in the 1970s. I tweeted and vlogged about it for the local television station, because Instagram didn’t exist yet. We traveled for two months, made a lot of casseroles, and raised money for the Ronald McDonald House.
